A sprawling 55,600-acre reservoir, Truman Lake offers excellent fishing for bass, crappies, white bass, stripers and other species virtually year-round. It is considered by many to be the best catfish lake in the state. Marinas and boat launch areas are available to the public. For those who enjoy fishing from the bank, there are over 950 miles of shoreline. Those who prefer to fish from a canoe, kayak, or another fishing boat, there is plenty of easy access. Benton County is a fisherman’s paradise! There are 55,600 acres of Truman Lake fishing and 54,000 acres of Lake of the Ozarks fishing in Benton County! Truman and Lake of the Ozarks are home to trophy largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish just waiting for your challenge!

In a 2002 catfish-angler survey by the MDC, the largest percentage of anglers responding said the Truman Lake fishery had declined. Bayless explained that the MDC is proposing the slot limit to restore more large blue catfish in Truman Lake. The same regulation is proposed for Lake of the Ozarks to keep that catfish fishery from declining. The land surrounding most of Truman Lake is public land owned by the Corps of Engineers. This gives anglers ample opportunity to fish from the bank. A good map with county roads and lake depths is a great tool to have. Spawning fish can be caught vertical jigging from the bank or casting and retrieving a jig fished about 12-18 inches below a float.

Catfish
Fish areas near swift current and deep water in large rivers. Heavy gear should be used because blues weighing 20 to 50 pounds are common in these waters.
Paddlefish
Also known as “spoonbills” because of the shape of their snouts, the fish feed on plankton and other microscopic prey and therefore do not take bait from hooks and must be snagged. The best snagging conditions occur when water temperature reaches 50 to 55 degrees and there is an increase in water flow. This prompts them to move upstream to spawn. Snagging season runs March 15 through April 30.
